How to brew amazing coffee at home: Part 2

So, you might be interested in those freshly roasted coffee beans that are finally available on Bonaire, but you don’t have an espresso machine at home? No problem, because you can make amazing tasting coffee at home with only a few simple tools! This time we will explain the second of three simple methods to make coffee at home without having to buy an expensive machine.

French press

The french press, also known as a cafetière, was invented in 1929. Funny enough it was not invented in France or by a Frenchman but by an Italian in Italy. They come in all sizes and materials, from one cup glass ones all the way to 1,5 liter stainless steel devices. If you are a bit clumsy like me, I would recommend an unbreakable variant made from stainless steel.

A french press uses immersion instead of percolation to extract the flavors from the ground coffee. So instead of letting the water go through a bed of ground coffee once (or a few times in case of a real percolator) you let the ground coffee float freely in the hot water. This creates a longer interaction between the coffee and the water and therefore more extraction of flavors.

What you need

  • Delicious freshly roasted coffee from Bonchi Boneiru

  • A french press

  • A kitchen scale to measure the coffee and water

  • A mug, cup, glass or pot to drink your coffee from

  • A kettle, water boiler or pan, something to boil your water in

  • A spoon

  • Water

How to make it

  1. Determine how much coffee you want to brew or how much will fit into your french press. We recommend using 75 grams of ground coffee per 1 liter of water. So, if you want to brew 300ml (a big mug) of coffee, you’ll need to use 22,5 grams of ground coffee

  2. Grind your coffee medium fine. If you don’t have a coffee grinder, no problem. Ask us to grind your coffee for french press

  3. Take the top and plunger off your french press and put the ground coffee in

  4. Boil your water

  5. Place your french press on the kitchen scale and make sure your kitchen scale is on zero

  6. When your water is boiling, take it off the heat and ways for a few seconds before you slowly pour it over the coffee in your french press. Use the kitchen scale to measure the amount of water you are adding

  7. Let it sit for 4 minutes

  8. Stir the coffee in the french press with a spoon so that all ground coffee will sink to the bottom

  9. Put the plunger in, slowly press it down so that it touches the top of the coffee (don’t push it all the way down)

  10. Enjoy your coffee!

*If you think that your coffee is not strong enough, you should try to use a little bit more coffee ground (so maybe 80 grams of coffee per 1 liter of water)
